The CAR office doesnât pore over the pictures of every new vehicle that is sent to us, but when itâs a brand new Ferrari â" and a Ferrari thatâs rumoured to be an estate â" people jump from their desks and jostle for the best position around the requisite computer. Having looked at the pictures with the rest of the CAR team, and then spent even longer studying them to write the first official pictures story, I must admit to being rather keen on the new Ferrari FF.
Iâm not a designer, or a design critic, so forgive my cack attempts at describing the looks, but to my eyes the proportions in the side profile shot look absolutely stunning. Unkind commentators will mention BMWâs Z3 M Coupe âbread vanâ but I think it looks low and long and lovely.
The rear is a peach too. Thereâs always been something about the pert back ends of Ferraris (drooping arse of the California notwithstanding) and the FF features signature rear lights, quad pipes and a glorious mix of curves and technical vents and slats.
The nose? The angle of the picture is odd, making it look much higher than it is â" look at the profile and youâll see the true height. Thereâs something New Stratos about the lights, but I love the bulge that looks like the bonnetâs been shut on them.
Only three photos have been released so far by Ferrari, and although weâll see it in the metal at the 2011 Geneva motor show, it wonât be until we see it moving that weâll be able to ultimately decide whether itâs a looker or not. The Ferrari 458 isnât beautiful, but it is stunning. I think the new Ferrari FF might be both.
And if it isnât, at least itâs better than the 612 Scaglietti it replaces.
